A MESSAGE FROM THE MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY
It is said that there is strength in numbers. Based upon that belief, thirty two years ago the John Harlan Law Club, The Cleveland Lawyer’s Association, The Black Women Lawyers’ Association, and the National Conference of Black Lawyers, Cleveland Chapter merged to form the Norman S. Minor Bar Association. NSMBA is an affiliate of the National Bar Association. Now thirty two years later the axiom remains true. While our membership continues to grow we need more people to support both our present and future programs.
Since we do not have any support or administrative staff, we are totally dependent upon our membership to carry out the tasks involved in our projects. As detailed in the other parts of this report, we have been very busy in 2011 and over the past years. We have a number of projects on the drawing table. We need your help.
The question asked most when a person is approached for membership in NSMBA is : what’s in it for me? Let me give you a long answer to a short question. I can easily tell you what NSMBA gets out of your membership: Participation, energy, knowledge, ideas and yes, money. Our members truly are the life of the organization.
The next part of the answer is more difficult, and can only be answered by you. What do you want from NSMBA? Do you want to help students become better attorneys? Do you want to help people avoid foreclosure? Do you want to help the elderly? If you can dream it, we can help turn it into reality. If you need help, we can put you in touch with some of the
brightest minds in the legal profession.
When this organization was created, the membership was dominated by practitioners, solo or otherwise. Our current roster reflects the changes in our society. We now have solo practitioners, in-house counsel, government attorneys, prosecutors and members of the judiciary. In the early years, joining NSMBA was a matter of survival, social consciousness and necessity. In this so called post-civil rights era, those reasons are no longer valid or are they? We guarantee that you get from NSMBA exactly what you put in to it.
We hope that you will join us as we push forward our ambitious program. We need you much more than you need us, or is it the other way around?
