About Us
The Norman S. Minor Bar Association is the largest organization of African-American lawyers in the state of Ohio. It was formed in 1980 by the merger of four previously existing African-American professional organizations: The John Harlan Law Club; The Cleveland Lawyers' Association; The Black Women Lawyers' Association; and The National Conference of Black Lawyers, Cleveland Chapter. NSBA is an affiliate of the National Bar Association.
The association was named in honor of Norman Selby Minor, one of the greatest trial lawyers in Cleveland’s history. A native Clevelander, he attended the University of Michigan's Law School and graduated from John Marshall Law School. Norman Minor was the first African-American assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor. He served in that office from 1932 to 1948. During his tenure, he handled a record 5,000 criminal cases, including 128 first-degree murder trials. In 1948, Minor entered private practice, where his flawless courtroom performances earned him the respect of his peers and attracted national attention and acclaim, until his death in 1968. The pioneering work of Norman S. Minor paved the way for all of the African American trial lawyers in Greater Cleveland who have, and will, follow in his illustrious footsteps.
The association boasts a membership of over 100 lawyers engaged in various aspects of legal practice throughout Cuyahoga and surrounding counties, and in all state and federal courts.
